The Dental Implant Process

3 Steps to a Beautiful, Restored Smile.

Investing in dental implants is not a decision to take lightly. Careful consideration of the procedure and significant research are important steps in deciding whether this treatment is right for you. Likewise, completing a consultation with our Chico dental implant provider at Kremer Dental Care can also help you decide whether dental implants are the right course of treatment for you.

In order to give you a better picture of the dental implant process and what it consists of, we’ll walk you through each step of the procedure. Starting with your initial dental implant consultation, Dr. Kremer and his experienced team are here to guide you through this reconstructive procedure and find the solution for your smile.

Initial Consultation

Your first visit to Kremer Dental Care focuses on identifying your oral health problems and determining whether you are a candidate for dental implant care. Using advanced diagnostic technology, our Chico implant dentist will conduct an in-depth examination of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. This gives Dr. Kremer much needed insight into the condition of your mouth overall and to identify if any pretreatments will be needed to create the right environment for dental implants.

Once this comprehensive examination, you’ll sit down one-on-one with Dr. Kremer to discuss your treatment options and ultimate smile goals. If you decide that dental implants are right for your smile, we’ll walk you through each step of the treatment process, financing, and other important details of the treatment process.

1. Inserting the Fixture

The first step in the dental implant procedure is inserting the fixture, also known as a titanium post or screw. During this outpatient procedure, Dr. Kremer will surgically place the fixture by creating a small hole in the jaw. Once the fixture has been secured in place, Dr. Kremer will mount a temporary cap to protect the surgical area and restore dental function without damaging the new implant.

2. Recovery and Osseointegration

Once the implant has been placed, you’ll be given a period of time to rest and recover. During this recovery period, the bone will begin growing around the implant fixture. Known as osseointegration, this naturally-occurring process is critical to the future success of your dental implant. With that in mind, Dr. Kremer will provide you with a list of post-surgery instructions and may schedule a few follow-up visits to ensure a successful recovery.

3. Attaching the Restoration

Once we’ve determined that the fixture has fully integrated into the bone, you’ll return to Kremer Dental Care for abutment and restoration placement. During this visit, Dr. Kremer will place the abutment and crown in the final step of the implant procedure. The abutment is a small screw that goes in between the implant and the crown – connecting them together and providing security. Finally, the porcelain crown is mounted onto the abutment as the final touch. When you leave our Chico dental office, you’ll leave with a brand new, completed smile.

Common Questions About the Implant Process

Are dental implants painful?

Our goal is to ensure you feel comfortable and confident through every step of your dental implant procedure. To help you relax, we offer oral-conscious and IV sedation that can be safely administered by Dr. Kremer or a local anesthesiologist.

Some discomfort may be experienced when recovering from the procedure, such as minimal swelling or soreness. Dr. Kremer can prescribe medication to help manage any pain in the first few days following surgery.

How long does the dental implant process take?

The time frame of a dental implant procedure varies from patient to patient and each particular case. In some cases, the procedure can be completed in as little as 4 months within several appointments.

However, if a patient needs supplementary treatment, the process will typically be extended over time.

How many surgeries are involved with dental implants?

Generally, getting dental implants involves two surgeries.

The first includes the surgical placement of the titanium post, also known as the screw, which sets the foundation for the rest of the implant.

The second surgery, months after the implant has been placed and healed, will consist of mounting the abutment and crown.

Any additional surgeries needed in order to qualify for dental implants will typically be done prior to your implant procedure. In some cases, depending on your oral health, they can be done at the same time.
